My time in education

Hello, my name is John Cruz. I am a graduate student at San Jose State University, and a recent graduate from Central State University receiving my Bachelors of Arts, Humanities, Interdisciplinary Studies. I have worked in education for over 14 years first as a Proctor supervising students in common areas, and then as a Library Media Assistant and later Library Media Technician, providing various services to students and staff.

Becoming a credentialed librarian

My overall academic goal and career goal is to obtain a Master of Library and Information Science degree from San Jose State University so that I can become a credentialed librarian. As a credentialed librarian I believe that I can help bridge the gap that exists in education to cultivate a culture of reading. Through research I have discovered that credentialed librarians are rare title to come by in the State of California, where I reside, this is to budgeting issue and a lack of interest in obtain Teacher Librarian Credentials. I will be the first to admit my goal is not to become a credentialed librarian, but rather to become a librarian within the city library where I can build a relationship with other Library Media Technicians and assists as I have with the local library in my workplace’s community. Through this relationship with the public library I have been able to hold lunch time events with students in partnership with the public library helping to foster a culture of reading and patronage. I also had the opportunity to speak with a credentialed librarian for my faculty interview, as a part of a project I completed at Central State University. I discovered that a librarian could have a focus such as youth/teens, children services, adult, and nonfiction services each corresponding to a department with a given library. The librarian I spoke with was a generalist, she worked in all the departments of the library and that is something that I am very much interested in doing.
